Experience

uring the second year of university, I took a module called 'Creative Sound Recording & Production'. Within this module, studio recording and mixing was covered as well as a 'field recording'. The field recording section of the module encouraged us to go to a live show to record the performances and afterwards in the studio, mix down the tracks. I was lucky to be part of a group organising an OXJAM, our job was to to set up all the equipment, microphones, lines, recording equipment by ourselves, alongside the sound engineer who was to be doing the live sound mixing. The performances for the OXJAM fundraiser included some dance performances, some beat boxing, stand-up comedy and also live music.

In the third year of my university studies, i had composed a 5.1 surround sound piece of music for a dance. During the dance performance i had to ride the fader levels to correctly reflect the mood of the dance. For my Final Music Project, i also decided to record and mix a band in 5.1 to show the difference in depth, mixing styles, and artic impression which could be applied to create completely different feelings. All work was recorded in a studio and then transferred to a 5.1 studio where i mixed in 2.0 and also the 2 styles of 5.1 surround, which were 'within the band' and the 'live-on stage'.

In the 'Music, Media & Community Arts' module, i volunteered to help a PhD student gather research data for her Electroacoustic Research Site II. The aim of her project was to try and see if it was possible to encourage a younger audience of year 9 students to gain an interest in Electroacoustic music. So that she could actively study the student's reactions, she decided it to best that me and a fellow DMU student took the lessons, teaching the children about Electroacoustic music instead.  During this time, we planned and did some workshops which include, roleplaying, quizzes and also some compositional work.

For my actual placement within the 'Music, Media and Community Arts' module, I worked with the Red Earth Theatre Company, Nottingham. The theatre company was in its early stages of planning an opera for a deaf audience, and so, were relying on the research and advice that could be provided by myself and two other students to help them create an interactive environment for an audience. At one point we built a 5 channel vibrating box where the user was to place their hand on top and then feel the music to help them perceive it. We also used the idea of cymatics to help the audience see the sound. When the ideas were presented and test at CURVE, Leicester to a deaf person, he found that it it helped him feel and understand the music much better.
